The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, on Sunday ordered increased security surveillance across the state following a sit-at-home directive linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra. The decision came after an emergency closed-door meeting with area commanders and tactical units at the police headquarters in Awka.
The police action followed reports that IPOB had announced a sit-at-home across the South-East and other areas described as Biafran territories in solidarity with traders at the Onitsha Main Market. The directive called on traders, transport workers, banks, schools, civil servants, and other sectors to suspend activities on Monday.
However, the directive has been disputed within IPOB itself. The group’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, publicly dismissed the order, stating that the individual issuing it under the name Emma Powerful had been compromised and was acting outside the group’s position. He maintained that IPOB had long distanced itself from sit-at-home actions and urged residents to ignore the call.
Despite the conflicting claims, the police said intelligence reports showed a pattern of coordinated online messages aimed at spreading fear and confusion among residents. The command noted that such activities could disrupt peace and public confidence if not addressed.
Following the assessment, the police directed an immediate increase in intelligence-led patrols, surveillance, and proactive policing across the state to protect lives and property. Residents were advised to remain calm, go about their lawful activities, and avoid unverified information circulating on social media.
The police also urged members of the public to report any suspicious movements to the nearest police station or through official emergency channels. Security agencies and representatives of the state government were part of the meeting, with assurances given that adequate measures were in place to maintain order.
The development comes as the Anambra State Government announced that the Onitsha Main Market would reopen on Monday, assuring traders and residents of full security during the resumption of economic activities.
