Parts of Nigeria’s South-East observed a sit-at-home order called by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Monday, February 2, 2026. The order aimed to show solidarity with traders affected by the recent closure of Onitsha Main Market.
Most markets, offices, schools, and major roads in the region were empty as residents stayed home. Only a few traders opened their shops despite the government reopening the market.
IPOB said the action was peaceful and widely followed across states including Anambra. The group described the turnout as a demonstration of loyalty to its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and a refusal to yield to intimidation or pressure from authorities.
The order coincided with ongoing tensions surrounding the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, with the group maintaining that their followers would continue to support him through lawful and disciplined actions.
Authorities and residents observed the day quietly, with minimal disruptions to essential activities in the region. The sit-at-home was seen as a statement of unity among residents and traders who were affected by the market closures.
