Former Atiku Spokesman Joins 2027 Ogun Gov Contest

Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson to ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar, announced his plan to contest the Ogun State governorship election in 2027. The declaration was made during an online interactive session with his supporters and journalists, held via Zoom.
Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, said his decision to seek the state’s top office was driven by concerns over what he described as ongoing gaps in development across Ogun State. He pointed to problems affecting security, education, healthcare, and general governance as reasons for stepping forward at this time.
He explained that Ogun State has struggled with poor policy continuity and has not fully used the economic benefits that come from being close to Lagos State. According to him, governance in the state should serve people in all communities, not just those close to the seat of power.
Sowunmi also expressed dissatisfaction with the condition of public healthcare facilities in the state, particularly older hospitals in Abeokuta, noting that the state has the capacity to perform better in healthcare delivery given its location and resources.
While speaking on his political future, Sowunmi acknowledged the internal crises affecting the PDP and said he was watching developments within the party and across other political platforms. He added that he would make a clear decision on his party affiliation ahead of the 2027 elections as consultations continue.
