Former Benue State Governor and ex-Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing ongoing internal disputes and a lack of unity within the party. The resignation, announced in a letter dated February 4, 2026, was addressed to the PDP chairman in Mbagber Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area, Benue State, and shared publicly by his Chief of Staff, Moses Ukeyima.
Suswam explained that his decision followed years of unresolved conflicts within the party, affecting its leadership, structure, discipline, and overall direction. He stated that despite attempts at reconciliation and intervention, the party remained trapped in repeated disputes, leaving no clear path for stability or effective contribution to national development.
The former governor described the PDP as a party that once symbolized internal democracy and constructive opposition, but which has increasingly been affected by prolonged crises. He said the current state of affairs no longer aligned with his personal values or his desire to contribute meaningfully to politics through a stable platform.
Suswam expressed hope that the party would eventually address these issues and find unity, but he indicated that he could not remain in a party where internal conflicts persist without resolution.
As of the time of reporting, the PDP leadership had not officially responded to Suswam’s resignation. His departure adds to ongoing discussions about the challenges facing opposition parties in Nigeria ahead of upcoming elections, highlighting issues of cohesion and internal management within political organizations.
