The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved the registration of two new political parties, the Democratic Leadership Alliance and the Nigeria Democratic Congress, bringing the number of registered political parties in the country to twenty. The decision was announced in Abuja during INEC’s first consultative meeting with political parties for the year 2026.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, explained that the commission received applications from 171 associations seeking registration as political parties. These applications were reviewed based on the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s guidelines for political parties. After the screening process, only fourteen associations met the initial conditions and were invited to continue to the next stage.
Out of the fourteen, eight groups successfully uploaded their documents on INEC’s portal. Further checks reduced the number to two associations that met the final requirements. The Democratic Leadership Alliance was found to have fully met all conditions and was approved for registration with effect from February 5, 2026. In addition, INEC confirmed that it would comply with a Federal High Court order from Lokoja directing the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. The commission stated that certificates of registration would be issued to both parties in due course.
The INEC chairman also cautioned political parties against internal leadership disputes and frequent court cases, noting that such actions create confusion, reduce public trust, and distract the commission from its duties. He urged parties to focus more on policy development and public engagement.
On voter matters, INEC called on political parties to encourage their supporters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards before the February 10 deadline for the ongoing distribution in the Federal Capital Territory. The commission also warned against vote buying, stating that anyone involved would face legal consequences.
INEC further disclosed that preparations for the 2027 general elections are ongoing, including the completion of the election timetable and plans for a nationwide voter revalidation exercise aimed at cleaning up the voters’ register.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Party Advisory Council commended INEC for its efforts and urged the commission to remain neutral and fair as the country moves toward the next general elections. The council also called for a level playing field for all parties and advised political leaders to resolve internal disputes through dialogue rather than litigation.
