‘Wike Made Me,’ Fubara Dedicates Award to FCT Minister

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Friday night dedicated his Man of the Year award to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during an award event held in Lagos.

The governor made the remarks while receiving the honour at the New Telegraph Award and Dinner Night, where he spoke about leadership, political struggles, and the need for peace in Rivers State.

Fubara said his style of leadership, which some critics see as a sign of weakness, was a deliberate choice aimed at maintaining calm and ensuring stability in the state.

He explained that choosing a softer approach was necessary for survival and for the protection of the state’s interests. According to him, patience and restraint can produce results at the right time.

The governor thanked his family and the people of Rivers State for standing by him during months of political tension. He noted that their calm attitude and support helped the state move forward despite the challenges.

In a move that drew attention, Fubara publicly dedicated the award to Wike, his predecessor and political ally. He credited the FCT minister for giving him the opportunity that brought him into public prominence. He said Wike’s support played a key role in his political journey and current position.

The remarks come after months of political crisis between the two leaders, which began shortly after Fubara took office in May 2023.

The conflict led to divisions within the Rivers State House of Assembly, threats of impeachment, and a tense political atmosphere in the state.

Recent events, however, show signs that relations between them may be improving. President Bola Tinubu had stepped in to mediate the dispute at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Following that meeting, both camps have made comments suggesting efforts toward reconciliation.
Wike had earlier expressed hope that the intervention would bring lasting peace to the state. Fubara had also acknowledged Wike’s role in some major projects, including the Port Harcourt Ring Road initiative.
There are also reports that the governor recently submitted a fresh list of commissioner nominees to the State Assembly as part of steps to restore full government activities. These developments suggest attempts to end the prolonged political disagreement and restore stability in Rivers State.
