Labour Party Demands Abure’s Arrest, Petitions IGP, DSS

The National Working Committee of the Labour Party on Monday, February 16, 2026, called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of former National Chairman, Julius Abure, and members of his faction over an alleged attack on the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. The Nenadi Usman-led leadership made the demand during a press conference held at the party headquarters.

The party leadership questioned why Abure and his associates were still moving freely despite what it described as acts capable of causing unrest within the party.

It accused the group of forcefully entering the national secretariat, damaging property and removing materials belonging to the party.

According to the Labour Party, the incident involved the destruction of billboards bearing the image of the Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman. The party also alleged that laptops, financial records, official documents and other sensitive materials were taken from the premises during the operation.

The leadership stated that it had formally written to the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services and other security agencies, requesting the arrest and prosecution of Abure and his associates. The party said it asked the agencies to enforce existing court judgments and ensure protection of the secretariat.

It further explained that security operatives had earlier provided coverage at the secretariat on February 10, 2026, to allow for a peaceful resumption of activities. However, it claimed that the alleged invasion by Abure’s group lasted over 30 minutes, during which several party assets were removed.

The Labour Party maintained that the actions of Abure and his faction amount to criminal invasion, impersonation and disregard for court rulings. It also accused the group of making online posts after the incident which, according to the party, suggested involvement in the operation.

The leadership added that subsequent statements issued by the faction from an undisclosed location were misleading and contrary to judicial decisions and the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission as regulator of political parties.

The party insisted that Nigeria operates under the rule of law and urged security agencies to take swift action to prevent further tension within the party.
