Gusau Hails Wike’s FCT Reforms and Infrastructure Drive

Former Coordinating Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Prof. Aminu Gusau, on Tuesday commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his style of governance and ongoing infrastructure renewal in Abuja.

He spoke at the 2026 Annual Distinguished Personality Lecture Series organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja.

Wike, who was the guest lecturer at the event, delivered a paper on the impact of political leadership on infrastructure development in Nigeria and its link to democratic dividends and good governance.

Gusau, who chaired the occasion and is also a visiting professor at the University of Kansas in the United States, described the minister as a public official whose time in office has brought visible changes across the FCT.

He said that since Wike assumed office in August 2023, the FCT Administration has taken steps to restore the Abuja Master Plan, improve infrastructure and complete projects that had been abandoned for years.

According to him, several major road projects have been finished or rehabilitated, especially those linking the city centre with satellite towns.

He noted that projects such as the Apo-Wasa Road and the repair of inner-city roads and major junctions have improved movement within the capital and supported business activities.

He also referred to ongoing works in satellite towns like Gwagwalada, Kubwa, Bwari and Karu, where roads, drainage systems and other public facilities are being upgraded.

Gusau said that contracts that were previously stalled have been revived and completed, reflecting an approach that focuses on continuity and responsibility in public administration.

Beyond road construction, he added that the FCT Administration has tightened development control and reformed land management processes to improve transparency and order.

He also mentioned improvements in street lighting, sanitation and public space management, which he said have contributed to better security and a cleaner city environment.

In his view, leadership often requires firm decisions and the ability to act even when such actions are not popular.

Gusau stated that Wike’s record, from his time as governor of Rivers State to his current position as FCT Minister, shows a pattern of direct action, infrastructure expansion and strong administrative control.

Drawing from his experience of living and teaching in the United States for many years, he said effective leaders are those who turn good intentions into visible results.

He maintained that governance should be judged by what citizens can see and experience in their daily lives, such as completed roads, restored projects and improved public services.

He added that it was fitting for a university environment to host such a discussion, as academic institutions serve as platforms for examining leadership and public performance.

According to him, Wike’s tenure in the FCT offers clear examples of governance driven by measurable outcomes that affect residents directly.
