FCT Declares Work-Free Day for Council Poll

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, a work-free day ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21.

He also announced a restriction of movement across the FCT from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The announcement was made during a broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Thursday. According to the minister, the decision was taken with the approval of President Bola Tinubu to allow residents travel to their communities and take part in the election of chairmen and councillors in the six area councils.

Wike called on residents to participate peacefully in the electoral process and to conduct themselves in an orderly manner. He urged voters to respect electoral rules and accept the outcome of the polls.

He added that security agencies have been directed to enforce the movement restriction during the stated period.

The minister also acknowledged the recent signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law by the president, stating that it reflects efforts to improve the country’s electoral system.

He expressed hope that the election would produce leaders who would contribute to development and stability in the territory.

The FCT administration encouraged all eligible voters to come out on Saturday to cast their ballots, assuring residents of its commitment to a peaceful and credible exercise.
