The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, on Monday expressed concern over the difficulties faced by students registering for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He spoke about the issue through a statement shared on his X handle after observing the situation during a recent visit to the area.

Obi said he noticed large crowds and confusion at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board office in Amawbia last Friday. According to him, the development appears similar to the challenges recorded last year when several Computer-Based Test centres were shut down over alleged infractions.
He noted that despite earlier complaints and expectations of improvement, students are still facing stress at the centre.
The former Anambra State governor explained that while there may be valid reasons for sanctioning some CBT centres, steps should be taken to prevent candidates from suffering as a result.

He suggested that centres under review could be allowed to operate under close supervision to reduce pressure on JAMB offices. He also proposed that previously approved centres could be used temporarily if new ones cannot be cleared quickly.
Obi warned that with the registration deadline set for February 26, many candidates risk missing the examination due to overcrowding and delays.
He said some students travel from distant communities and are forced to stay overnight in Awka just to complete their registration.
He stated that candidates should not lose the opportunity to sit for the examination because of administrative problems. Obi added that urgent steps are needed to prevent further hardship for students preparing for the exam.
His remarks come amid reports of registration challenges in other parts of the country, even as JAMB announced that more than one million candidates have already registered for the 2026 UTME.
The examination body had earlier advised students to register early and avoid issues such as biometric errors and late applications.
