Barrister Olumide Akpata on Tuesday in Benin City defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress during a public event attended by top political figures and party members.

Akpata, who was the Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State in 2024, formally registered with the ADC and received his membership card at the gathering.

He was welcomed into the party by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Edo State governor John Odigie Oyegun, former governor Oserhiemen Osunbor, former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie, and other party leaders. The Edo State chairman of the ADC and other stakeholders were also present at the event.
Akpata said his decision to move to the ADC was driven by his belief that Nigeria can improve if citizens choose the right leaders and political platform. He stated that he joined the party alongside his running mate in the 2024 governorship election, Yusuf Asama Kadiri, as well as members of the Obidient Movement in Edo State. According to him, their move was aimed at strengthening the ADC and contributing to its growth in the state.
He expressed appreciation to the party leaders for receiving him and those who moved with him. He also acknowledged the role of Peter Obi and other senior figures in facilitating his entry into the party.
Speaking at the event, John Odigie Oyegun said the ADC continues to grow in both number and influence. He described Akpata as a respected figure whose entry into the party reflects its appeal. Oyegun noted that Akpata had once appeared less interested in continuing active politics but later chose to return, believing that the country needs change.
Kennedy Odion, the Edo State chairman of the ADC, described Akpata as a politician who understands governance and the direction the country should take. He said the party is gaining members who are ready to work toward national progress.
Peter Obi, who also addressed the gathering, said the ADC remains focused on building a better Nigeria despite political pressure. He compared Nigeria’s economic situation with that of Bangladesh, noting differences in growth and development over the past decade. According to him, while Bangladesh increased its gross domestic product and income per person through investment in productive sectors, Nigeria’s economy declined during the same period.
Obi argued that the country must shift from spending on consumption to investing in production to achieve economic growth. He called on supporters to remain determined despite challenges, stating that long-term progress would require commitment and effort.
The event marked a new chapter in Edo politics as Akpata and his supporters formally aligned with the ADC ahead of future political contests in the state and at the national level.
