Controversy Trails N100m Payment Linked to Former IGP’s Son

Residents of Anambra State have reacted strongly to reports that N100 million was moved from funds linked to the state to the bank account of Victor Egbetokun, said to be the son of former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The transfer, which reportedly occurred in four separate payments of N25 million each, has sparked debate across the state and beyond.

The issue became public after media reports revealed the transaction. During a live television appearance, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the money was received by the former police chief’s son.

He explained that after the matter came to light, the recipient was advised to contact his bank to reverse the funds, and the amount was returned.

Despite the refund, many people in Anambra have continued to question how such a large sum could be paid into a private account in the first place.

Some residents expressed concern about the way public funds are handled under the current administration led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Others argued that it was unusual that the money ended up in the account of someone with no known official dealings with the state.

Public affairs commentator Kingsley Ubani raised questions about the approval process behind the transfer and asked how the payment could have been made without detection.

He wondered whether similar transactions may have occurred in the past without public knowledge and called for clear answers from those responsible for managing the state’s finances.

Another resident, Peter Ndukaike, said the silence of the state government since the report surfaced has added to public suspicion.

He noted that many people expected a direct explanation from the authorities and said the lack of detailed clarification has deepened concerns among citizens.

Journalist Fisayo Soyombo also reacted on social media, questioning how an alleged mistaken transfer of such magnitude could have ended up in the account of the son of the country’s top police official at the time.

His post attracted widespread attention and fueled further debate online.
In response to the controversy, the Press Secretary to the Anambra State Governor, Christian Aburime, denied that the transfer was carried out by the state government.

He maintained that the incident was an error that had already been corrected months ago and insisted that it was not linked to the Anambra State Government.

He described the matter as settled and said there was no need for further discussion.

The development has continued to generate discussion among residents, with many calling for greater clarity on how the transaction occurred and who was responsible.

While officials maintain that the money has been returned and that the state government was not involved, public interest in the matter remains high as citizens seek reassurance over the handling of public funds.
