Zamfara PDP Leaders Urge Gov Lawal to Dump Party for APC

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Zamfara State have urged Governor Dauda Lawal to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress as internal pressure mounts within the opposition party.

The call reportedly came during an emergency meeting convened by the governor to review the political future of the state.

The development was made public on Saturday by APC chieftain Iran Muhammad in a statement shared on social media. He disclosed that the governor met with members of his cabinet and key PDP figures to discuss the next political step.

According to him, those present at the meeting advised the governor to consider joining the APC.

A video shared alongside the statement claimed that the meeting took place late at night and focused on the direction Zamfara politics should take ahead of future elections.

The report suggests that the idea of leaving the PDP was openly discussed among party leaders in the state.

The situation comes at a time when the PDP is facing a series of defections across the country. Governor Lawal is said to be among the few PDP governors still in office after the recent exit of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri from the party.

With Fintiri’s departure, only a small number of PDP governors remain, including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

The party has also been dealing with leadership disputes at the national level. A recent judgement by the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan upheld the national convention held in November 2025, which produced Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as National Chairman.

However, earlier in January, a Federal High Court in the same city had nullified the convention, creating confusion and further internal strain.

As political realignments continue across the country, attention is now on whether Governor Lawal will remain in the PDP or take the step being suggested by party stakeholders in Zamfara.
