Kano Assembly Begins Impeachment Move Against Deputy Governor

The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday began impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam-Gwarzo, over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The action took place during plenary at the state assembly complex in Kano when lawmakers formally presented the notice as part of constitutional procedures guiding such cases.

The impeachment process started after the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Dala, introduced the notice before members during the sitting.

The Speaker of the House, Ismail Falgore, later read the document before the lawmakers, marking the beginning of the process that could lead to the deputy governor’s removal from office if it proceeds through all the required stages.

Lawmakers involved in the process stated that the action followed the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which gives state legislatures the authority to begin impeachment proceedings against a deputy governor or governor accused of gross misconduct while in office.

According to the assembly, a total of 38 lawmakers signed the notice seeking the removal of the deputy governor. After the notice was presented, the Speaker directed that Abdulsalam-Gwarzo be officially served with the document in line with constitutional procedures, allowing the process to continue as required by law.

The move comes amid political tension within the Kano State government that has been developing for some time. The situation became more complicated after Governor Abba Yusuf left the New Nigeria Peoples Party and joined the All Progressives Congress last year.

While the governor moved to the new party, the deputy governor decided to remain with the NNPP.

His decision not to follow the governor to the APC reportedly created divisions within the state’s political leadership and widened disagreements between both camps.

The disagreement has continued to raise questions about the political future of the deputy governor and his position within the administration.

The impeachment process initiated by the House of Assembly is expected to follow constitutional steps, which include serving the deputy governor with the allegations and allowing further procedures to determine the outcome of the case.

The development has drawn attention across the state as observers watch how the situation will unfold in the coming days.
