PDP Is Dead – Akpabio Mocks Opposition As Senators Defect

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Friday reacted to the growing crisis within opposition parties during plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja, where several lawmakers announced their defection from their parties.

The development occurred while Akpabio was reading a letter from Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a former governor of Sokoto State, who confirmed his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the African Democratic Congress.

The letter from Tambuwal informed the Senate of his resignation from the PDP and his move to the ADC. During the session, Akpabio also mentioned that the chamber had received notices of resignations and political movement from members of other parties, including the Labour Party and some minority caucus members.

While reading the letter on the Senate floor, the Senate President reacted to the wave of defections and the situation within opposition parties. He spoke about the internal problems affecting several parties and referred to the condition of the opposition while reacting to the information contained in the defection letters.

Akpabio noted that the crisis in the opposition was not limited to one political party, as various parties were experiencing internal problems. He referred to the condition of the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party while addressing the chamber as he continued to read the letters from lawmakers who had decided to leave their parties.

During the plenary, Akpabio also dismissed the idea that the ruling All Progressives Congress was responsible for the challenges being faced by opposition parties. According to him, the issues affecting the parties were mainly the result of leadership problems within those organisations.

He further pointed out that several parties, including the All Progressives Grand Alliance, the Labour Party, and other smaller political groups, were facing difficulties in maintaining unity among their members. He said these internal challenges had led to a number of resignations and defections among lawmakers.

Akpabio also spoke about the balance of power in the Senate chamber, noting that the defections from opposition parties were affecting their strength within the legislature. He said the movement of lawmakers from different parties was gradually changing the composition of the minority bloc in the Senate.
