2027: Makinde, Olawepo-Hashim in Closed-Door Meeting Over PDP Crisis

On Wednesday night in Abuja, Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State, met with Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, as part of ongoing efforts to address the party’s internal crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.

The meeting was held behind closed doors and formed part of wider consultations within the party.

The discussion focused on the need for unity among party leaders and members, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation across different groups within the party. The engagement also looked at the direction of the party and how to rebuild trust among stakeholders.

Olawepo-Hashim described the meeting as useful and aimed at moving the party forward. He acknowledged Makinde’s role in supporting the party and promoting its principles over time. He also stressed that unity remains necessary for the party to function effectively and play its role in national politics.

The meeting comes at a time when the PDP is dealing with internal disagreements that started after its national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025. The convention led to the emergence of a new leadership but also created divisions among members.

The situation became more complicated after the exit of the former national chairman before the end of his tenure and the rise of different leadership claims within the party. Tensions increased further following the removal of some members and the emergence of another faction.

A recent judgment by the Court of Appeal, which nullified the convention, added to the uncertainty surrounding the party’s leadership.

In response, efforts are ongoing to resolve the crisis, with the party’s Board of Trustees leading talks among members to restore unity and stability.
