Delta Condemns ‘Barbaric’ Assaults on Women at Ozoro Festival

The Delta State Government has reacted to reports that some women were harassed and sexually assaulted during a cultural festival in Ozoro, describing the acts as cruel and unacceptable.

The incident, which came to public attention through circulating videos and claims, has raised concern across the state and beyond.

The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, stated that security agencies have been asked to investigate the matter and identify those involved. He made it clear that no one should use cultural events as a cover for unlawful acts.

The government assured residents that it remains focused on protecting the safety and rights of citizens, especially women and vulnerable groups. It also called on organisers of festivals and community leaders to put proper security measures in place to prevent such incidents in the future.

Authorities restated that the state will not tolerate gender-based violence and warned that anyone found guilty will face legal action. The development has led to strong reactions from members of the public, many of whom expressed concern about the growing trend of abuse being linked to social and cultural gatherings.

The Nigeria Police Force in Delta State has also begun an investigation into the incident. The police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, described the situation as disturbing and confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible.
