Two factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligned with Nyesom Wike and Taminu Turaki, are in conflict over who controls the party structure and who should be its governorship candidate for the June 20 election. The disagreement has created tension within the party as both sides lay claim to legitimacy.

The faction linked to Taminu Turaki insists it is the recognised leadership in Ekiti State and has put forward Wole Oluyede as the party’s governorship candidate. This group maintains that its leadership remains valid and has not been dissolved by any court ruling. It also points to a court judgment which it says confirmed Oluyede as the party’s candidate and directed the electoral body to recognise him.

On the other hand, the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike has rejected both the leadership claims and the candidacy put forward by the Turaki group. The Wike-backed camp argues that the current structure of the party is tied to a national caretaker committee led by Abduraham Mohammed, which it says is the only recognised authority following a court decision.

The Wike-aligned leadership in the state further stated that it had already dissolved the structure set up by the Turaki group before conducting its own congress, where a new state working committee emerged. According to this faction, the earlier structure formed by the opposing group was not properly established and lacks legitimacy within the party.
The dispute has also extended to the issue of the governorship candidate, as the Wike-backed group insists that no candidate has been officially accepted or processed through the proper party channels in Ekiti State. It maintains that any ambition must follow laid-down procedures and that no individual can act outside the party’s constitution.
This ongoing disagreement reflects deeper divisions within the PDP in Ekiti State, as both factions continue to push their claims while preparations for the governorship election move forward.
