Labour Party shifts congresses, delays national convention

The Labour Party on Tuesday postponed its planned ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention, which were earlier scheduled to begin from March 26, 2026, across Nigeria.

The decision was taken after a joint meeting involving members of the party’s Interim National Working Committee and representatives of labour unions, who agreed to delay the process to allow more time for preparations.

The party had earlier fixed March 26 for ward congresses, March 28 for local government congresses, March 31 for state congresses, and April 11 for the national convention. However, the leadership resolved to shift all activities to a later date that will be announced soon.

According to the party, the postponement is to give both existing members and new entrants enough time to complete the ongoing membership re-registration exercise, which it considers important for a smooth and inclusive process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As part of steps to organise the exercise, the party also set up a 45-member committee to oversee the congresses and convention. The committee is led by Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives, alongside several other lawmakers and party members drawn from different parts of the country.

While inaugurating the committee, the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, urged members to carry out their duties with fairness and dedication. She said the delay should be used to ensure proper planning so that the exercises can be conducted without issues.

The party also appealed to its members, supporters, and the Independent National Electoral Commission to understand the reason for the change in schedule, assuring that a fresh timetable will be released in due course.
