Makinde Denies Defection rumours, Reaffirms PDP Loyalty

On Monday in Ibadan, Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, dismissed rumours about leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and confirmed he remains a member, while addressing party stakeholders from all 33 local government areas at the Government House.

The governor spoke amid growing talks about his political future after a recent meeting in Kano where he was seen alongside Peter Obi and Seriake Dickson at the residence of Rabiu Kwankwaso. The meeting had raised questions about possible political realignments, but Makinde made it clear that he has no plans to leave the PDP.

He told party members that despite internal challenges, the PDP remains active and will take part fully in the 2027 general elections. He said the party will present candidates for all positions and continue to compete at both state and national levels.

Makinde also called for unity among party leaders and members in Oyo State, urging them to work together and resolve differences ahead of the elections. He directed leaders across the zones to hold meetings to settle disputes and agree on common ground that will strengthen the party.

As part of preparations for the next election cycle, the governor announced that certain lawmakers would receive automatic tickets. He explained that first-term members of the State House of Assembly would be allowed to return, while decisions on other lawmakers would follow existing agreements, including rotation arrangements.

He added that the coming election would be tough but expressed confidence that the party could win if members stay united and focused. According to him, success in politics requires effort and persistence, and the PDP must be ready to face the challenge ahead.

At another stakeholders’ meeting held the same day, Makinde again assured party faithful that all aspirants in the state would run under the PDP platform. He said the party plans to adopt a consensus method in selecting candidates to reduce conflict and maintain unity within its ranks.

The governor ended by restating his commitment to the party and said the PDP remains the main platform for political activities in Oyo State as preparations for 2027 continue.
