Tension in Ibadan as Oyo moves to crown APC aspirant Alli Oba

Tension has begun to build in Ibadan following the decision of the Oyo State Government to install Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who represents Oyo South, as a beaded crown Oba. The move has drawn attention across the city, especially among political stakeholders and residents.

The plan was communicated in a letter issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, and addressed to the Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. The letter explained that the coronation of selected high chiefs had been pending for some time and should now be carried out.

Alongside Alli, other chiefs listed for installation include Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin and Kola Babalola. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at Mapo Hall.
Following the announcement, reactions have emerged from different groups within Ibadan. Some individuals see the move as a normal traditional process, while others believe it may be linked to political developments in the state.

There are also discussions about how the planned coronation could affect Alli’s political ambition as a governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress. A resident who spoke on the matter explained that the law does not prevent someone with a traditional title from seeking political office. The resident added that such titles can even be declined or accepted later, depending on personal decisions.
