PDP Convention Will Hold, Reconciliation to Continue — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Friday in Abuja said the Peoples Democratic Party will proceed with its National Convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 and continue efforts to settle internal issues after the event.

He spoke after inspecting preparations at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, where the gathering will take place.

Wike explained that the convention will go on as planned despite ongoing disagreements within the party. He said attempts to bring together different groups will not stop, adding that resolving internal issues is an ongoing process in a large political party like the Peoples Democratic Party.

He also dismissed the appeal filed at the Supreme Court by the group led by Tanimu Turaki, stating that it would not affect the convention. According to him, the party remains focused on moving forward and strengthening its structure ahead of future elections.

The minister, who was joined by several party leaders including Okezie Ikpeazu, Mao Ohuabunwa, and Mohammed Abdulrahman, said discussions are ongoing to ensure that all members feel included. He noted that disagreements are normal in any large group and that the party leadership is ready to listen and find common ground.

On the issue of zoning, Wike said the party has already shared positions among different regions to make the process smooth. He explained that the presidential ticket has been assigned to the southern region, while the national chairmanship has been given to the north. This arrangement, he said, is expected to reduce conflict and make the convention easier to conduct.

Speaking on readiness, Wike said preparations were almost complete, with arrangements for delegates and seating already in place. He added that the party expects about 2,500 delegates to attend the convention.

He also said the party is confident about its chances in the 2027 general elections, noting that it is working towards presenting a strong front to Nigerians. According to him, the focus remains on unity, proper organization, and building support across the country as the party prepares for the next election cycle.
