Sokoto PDP shun Wike faction Convention, Insists on Neutrality

The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that it will not take part in the national convention being planned in Abuja by a faction linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The decision was made known on Saturday by the state party leadership, which said it would remain neutral in the ongoing leadership crisis within the party.

According to the state chapter, it does not recognise any of the factions currently claiming control of the PDP and has chosen to stay away from activities organised by either side. The party explained that its position is consistent with its earlier actions, including its absence from a previous convention held in Ibadan.

The development comes at a time when divisions within the PDP continue to grow, with different groups forming separate structures and making competing claims over leadership.

The crisis began after disagreements over the party’s national leadership and the conduct of the 2025 convention in Ibadan, which was later set aside by a court due to procedural issues and failure to follow electoral guidelines.

Since then, rival blocs have emerged, including one aligned with Wike and another loyal to the earlier leadership. Both sides have continued efforts to strengthen their control, including plans to hold separate conventions.

This situation has deepened the internal conflict and raised concerns among party members about the future of the PDP as a major opposition force ahead of upcoming elections.

Despite calls from stakeholders for unity and dialogue, the disagreement has not been resolved. The Sokoto PDP’s decision to remain neutral and avoid factional activities reflects the ongoing struggle within the party as it attempts to manage its internal issues while preparing for future political contests.
