Tinubu’s Deadline Sparks Wave of Resignations Ahead of 2027

President Bola Tinubu’s order for political appointees seeking elective positions in 2027 to step down has led to multiple resignations across the federal government as the deadline passed on March 31, 2026.

The directive affected ministers, aides, and heads of government agencies who intend to take part in party primaries scheduled ahead of the general elections.

Several top officials have already left their positions. Among them is the former Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, who resigned shortly before the deadline after meeting with the president.

He is preparing to contest the governorship election in Gombe State in 2027. Also, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, stepped down to pursue a governorship ambition in Bauchi State, while the former Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Sununu, is aiming for a senatorial seat in Kebbi State.

The wave of exits was not limited to ministers. Nasiru Gawuna resigned as chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria board and also left his party, while other appointees, including aides to the president and board members of government agencies, also vacated their roles to pursue political ambitions.

The directive followed provisions in the Electoral Act, which require public officeholders to resign before taking part in party primaries. The Independent National Electoral Commission has already fixed dates for these primaries, expected to hold between late April and May 2026, with deadlines for submission of candidates later in the year.

Meanwhile, attention has shifted to other government officials who are believed to be considering political contests but have not resigned. Names such as Muhammed Pate, Bayo Adelabu, Nuhu Ribadu, and Bosun Tijani have been mentioned in political discussions across different states. Their next steps remain uncertain following the expiration of the deadline.

With these developments, the focus is now on how the exits will affect the structure of the federal cabinet and the political landscape across states as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.

The growing number of aspirants is also expected to shape competition within parties and influence outcomes in key states across the country.
