ADC Crisis: Kachikwu Faction Announces Convention Plan

In Abuja on Tuesday, a faction of the African Democratic Congress led by Dumebi Kachikwu announced plans to hold a national convention and set up an interim leadership to manage the party’s affairs as the internal crisis continues.

The development was made known by the faction’s spokesperson, Norman Obinna, after what he described as an emergency meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee. He said the meeting was attended by state chairmen and other party officials and was called to address ongoing leadership disputes.

According to the group, earlier efforts to resolve the crisis through internal agreements included a plan to organise a national convention to elect new leaders.

However, the process has not been carried out nearly two years after the agreement was reached, which has contributed to the current situation within the party.

The faction also raised concerns about actions taken by the former leadership under Ralph Nwosu, stating that there were attempts to transfer control of the party to individuals who were not recognised members while sidelining existing party structures at the state level.

In response, the group said it had already taken legal steps by filing cases in court to challenge those actions, even before the involvement of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the dispute.

The faction maintained that since there has been no functional National Working Committee since 2022, the National Executive Committee remains the highest authority within the party for now.

As part of its decisions, the group also distanced itself from another bloc within the party linked to David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Bolaji Abdullahi, stating that actions taken by that group do not represent the party.

With this move, the crisis within the ADC continues to deepen, as different factions push separate plans and claims over the party’s leadership ahead of the next general elections.
