Wike-backed faction takes control of PDP headquarters in Abuja

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Nyesom Wike took control of the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Saturday after it was reopened by the Nigeria Police Force.

The takeover happened in Abuja after months of internal conflict within the party. The police unsealed the secretariat, known as Wadata Plaza, and handed it over to a faction of the party’s National Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed. This followed a court ruling that settled the leadership dispute in favour of the Wike-backed group.

The crisis, which began in November, involved a clash between two factions of the party leadership. One group was supported by some governors, including those from Oyo and Bauchi states, while the other was aligned with Wike. The dispute led to the closure of the party headquarters and a series of legal battles.

After the Court of Appeal gave its decision in March, the police reopened the secretariat and restored access to the Wike-aligned leadership. The faction now in control said it has resumed full operations at both Wadata Plaza and another party office in Maitama.

The leadership warned members and supporters against causing trouble at the secretariat and said security agencies have been alerted to maintain order. It also called on party members to remain calm and work together moving forward.

The group praised the police for carrying out the court order and maintaining order during the process. It also acknowledged the role played by Wike in supporting the faction during the crisis.

Party leaders said the development marks a new phase for the party and urged all members to put aside differences and focus on unity ahead of future political activities.
