In Abia State on Sunday, stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress endorsed Benjamin Kalu for the 2027 governorship election during a meeting held in Umuahia, while a rival aspirant rejected the move, raising concerns about fairness within the party.

The gathering brought together party leaders and members from the three senatorial districts and all 17 local government areas of the state. During the meeting, participants supported Kalu, who is the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, urging him to declare his interest in the race. They said the party needed a candidate they believed could win the election and strengthen its chances ahead of 2027.

Kalu, while responding to the endorsement, appreciated the support shown by party members but did not make an immediate declaration. He said he would make his position known soon and indicated that preparations were ongoing within the party to compete strongly in the next governorship election. He also noted that the party intended to play a more active opposition role in the state.

However, the endorsement was quickly opposed by Mascot Uzor Kalu, another governorship aspirant within the party. He criticised the process, saying it appeared to favour one candidate without proper involvement of other contenders. He warned that any attempt to impose a candidate without a fair and open process would not be accepted.
Mascot Kalu maintained that all aspirants should be given equal opportunity to contest and that any arrangement that sidelines others could lead to internal conflict. His reaction reflects growing tension within the party as members position themselves ahead of the 2027 election.
The development shows early signs of competition within the party in Abia, with different interests already emerging as the election draws closer.
