ADC expels Bala, Abejide, others over party crisis

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by David Mark, on Tuesday expelled several members, including factional chairman Nafiu Bala and House of Representatives member Leke Abejide, during its national convention held in Abuja over alleged anti-party activities.

The decision was taken at the convention attended by more than 3,000 delegates, where party members gathered to discuss internal matters and prepare for future elections.

The affected individuals were accused of actions that created division and confusion within the party, leading to their removal alongside other members such as Kingsley Temitope, Noman Obinna, Kennedy Odion, Stella Chukwuma, and four others.

The motion for their expulsion was presented and supported by lawmakers within the party, reflecting growing tensions among different factions. The development is part of a long-running leadership struggle that has troubled the party since 2025, following disputes over the tenure and succession of former chairman Ralph Nwosu.

The crisis deepened after disagreements arose on who should take over leadership after Nwosu’s tenure ended, leading to multiple factions laying claim to control of the party. Legal battles followed, with cases reaching higher courts, while the Independent National Electoral Commission also made adjustments to the party’s records based on court directives.

In addition, another group within the party recently announced a caretaker committee, further dividing the ADC into three separate factions led by different figures. Despite these internal conflicts, the Mark-led group went ahead with its convention as planned.

The ongoing disputes have raised concerns about the party’s unity and readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections, as efforts to stabilise leadership continue within its ranks.
