Atiku, Kwankwaso Attend Opposition Summit in Oyo

Top opposition leaders from across Nigeria gathered in Ibadan on Saturday for a national summit focused on strengthening cooperation among political parties and discussing the future of opposition politics in the country.

The meeting, held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House, drew major political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was listed to chair the gathering, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as host.

Leaders and members from the Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, New Nigeria Peoples Party and other political groups attended the summit, which was organised around talks on building a united opposition and responding to challenges facing the country.

The gathering is expected to focus on political cooperation ahead of future elections, with discussions also covering democracy, governance, insecurity, electoral reforms and the economy. Several speakers were lined up to present papers on these issues, including experts and former public officials.

Other political figures seen at the summit included Aminu Tambuwal, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, Rotimi Amaechi and senior members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, showing broad participation across different political blocs.

The summit also came amid fresh political tension following claims by the African Democratic Congress that there were attempts to frustrate the gathering. Despite the allegation, the meeting went ahead, with organisers describing it as part of efforts to deepen collaboration among opposition forces.

The event is being viewed as part of early moves by opposition leaders to build common ground and shape political strategy ahead of future electoral contests.
