FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday across Nigeria to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day, with the announcement made on Wednesday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government.

The declaration was contained in a statement issued in Abuja and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani. The government said the holiday is to honour workers across the country for their role in national development.

Tunji-Ojo acknowledged the efforts of Nigerian workers in different sectors, noting that their daily contributions continue to support the growth and progress of the country. He said workers remain central to the nation’s development and urged them to stay committed to their duties.

The minister also called on workers to maintain values such as patriotism, discipline and dedication, adding that these qualities are needed to move the country forward.

He stated that the government remains focused on improving the welfare and safety of workers, while also working to create an environment that supports economic growth and job opportunities.

The minister advised Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity and hard work in building a better nation. He also urged citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the celebration.

Workers’ Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is observed every year on May 1 in many countries to recognise the contributions of workers and the labour movement.

The public holiday will allow workers across the country to take part in activities marking the day, which often include parades, gatherings and other events organised by labour unions and related groups.

The announcement continues the long-standing practice of setting aside the day as a national holiday in Nigeria to honour the workforce and their role in the country’s development.
