Bauchi Gov Bala Mohammed dumps PDP for APM with loyalists

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has left the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the Allied Peoples Movement, along with many of his political allies, following a stakeholders’ meeting held on Saturday. The decision came after days of consultations and discussions on the crisis within the PDP and the way forward for his political camp.

The governor explained that he had spent over a week in Abuja meeting party leaders and other stakeholders in an effort to find solutions to the internal disputes affecting the PDP. However, the recent Supreme Court ruling, which nullified parallel conventions held by different factions of the party, changed the situation and left the party without clear leadership, with its Board of Trustees stepping in temporarily.

He noted that the outcome of the judgment and events that followed created more uncertainty within the party, making it difficult to continue political activities under its platform. After reviewing the situation and consulting widely, Mohammed and his supporters decided to move to a different party to maintain political direction and prepare for future elections.

While leaving the PDP, the governor acknowledged the role the party played in his political career and years in public service. He made it clear that the decision to leave was based on the need to secure a stable political platform rather than personal grievances.

Mohammed described the APM as a party without legal issues and one that can serve as a fresh platform for his political plans. He also disclosed that members of the State Executive Council who intend to contest elections have stepped down from their positions in line with legal requirements.

To manage the transition, the governor outlined steps such as setting up a committee to ensure proper movement into the new party, beginning membership registration, engaging with party leaders, and working with the electoral body for formal processes.

The National Chairman of the APM, Yusuf Dantalle, received the governor and his supporters into the party and handed him a membership card and party insignia, marking his official entry. He described the party as one guided by discipline and service, adding that it operates without internal conflict and follows its constitution.

With this move, political activities in Bauchi State are expected to shift as the governor and his supporters settle into their new party and prepare for upcoming elections.
