Kingsley Chinda, a close ally of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, has been cleared by the All Progressives Congress, APC, to participate in the party’s governorship primary election in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 election.

The screening process took place as the APC continued preparations for its governorship primary scheduled for May 21. Chinda, who currently represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and serves as Minority Leader, recently joined the race for the party’s governorship ticket.

He is expected to compete against incumbent Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other aspirants seeking to fly the APC flag in the next governorship election. Political attention has continued to focus on the contest due to the ongoing rivalry between Wike and Fubara in Rivers politics.

Although Wike has not officially named his preferred candidate for the election, there are indications within party circles that Chinda could receive his support if he wins the APC primary. The minister had earlier made it clear that he was against the re-election of Fubara and promised to reveal his preferred governorship candidate at the appropriate time.
The development adds another layer to the political contest in Rivers State as parties continue consultations, screenings and preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.
