NDC adopts consensus primaries in Nasarawa

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has adopted consensus primaries for governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly elections in Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 general elections as the party moves to avoid internal disputes and strengthen its chances at the polls.

The decision was announced on Saturday in Lafia during a one-day North Central Zonal Congress attended by delegates from the six states in the region and the Federal Capital Territory.

Speaking at the event, the NDC Chairman in Nasarawa State, Dogo Shammah, said the party chose the consensus method to maintain unity among members and prevent divisions that could weaken the party before the elections.

He said the party plans to present candidates for all elective positions in the state through peaceful agreements among members instead of bitter contests during primaries.

Shammah also called on residents across the 13 local government areas of Nasarawa State and people in the North Central region to join the party, describing the NDC as a platform focused on justice, equity and development.

According to him, although the NDC is a newly registered political party, it already has a strong structure and leadership capable of challenging other major parties in the country ahead of the 2027 elections.

He praised the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, for helping to attract top opposition politicians and influential figures into the party. He added that the NDC is preparing to tackle insecurity, unemployment and economic hardship if given the opportunity to lead.

The North Central National Vice Chairman of the party, Barnabas Ejisi, also urged Nigerians to support the NDC during the next general elections. He said many citizens were unhappy with the present situation in the country and needed a political platform that would focus on service to the people.

Ejisi stated that the entry of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had strengthened the party’s image and increased public interest in the NDC.

He encouraged party members to contest for elective positions and work towards building the party across the region ahead of the 2027 polls.

Also speaking at the congress, the NDC Chairman in Plateau State, Solomon Ndam, said the large turnout at the event showed growing support for the party in the North Central zone. He urged members to mobilise voters and support the party in future elections.
