The faction of the Social Democratic Party led by Shehu Gabam on Wednesday expelled the party’s former presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, along with 12 other members during its National Convention and Presidential Primary in Abuja. The decision was announced as delegates loyal to the faction gathered to choose a new direction for the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The convention, which took place in the Federal Capital Territory, also produced Lagos businessman Abimbola Atanda as the faction’s new sole presidential candidate. Delegates adopted his candidature through a voice vote shortly after the announcement of the expulsions.

The development came amid the deepening leadership crisis within the SDP, with rival groups battling for control of the party structure. Members of the Gabam camp moved ahead with the convention despite disagreements within the party over leadership and legitimacy.

Apart from Adebayo, other party officials and members affected by the expulsion include factional National Chairman Sadiq Gombe, National Secretary Olu Agunloye, and National Publicity Secretary Rufus Aiyenigba. Others removed from the party are Joseph Abu, Maggie Batubo, Sa’adatu Abdullahi, Abimbola Aderemi, Oguchukwu Uba, Huseesini Bello, Alabi Lekan, Rosemary Effiong, and Abubakar Modibo.
During the gathering, delegates also dissolved the party’s National Working Committee before selecting a new set of national officers. The election of the fresh officers was carried out through a voice vote at the convention venue.
Party members at the event said the decisions were part of efforts by the faction to reorganise the SDP and strengthen its preparations for the next presidential election. The convention ended with the newly chosen leaders taking over the affairs of the faction
