ADC Faction Dissolves NWC, Declares Kachikwu Presidential Candidate

A faction of the African Democratic Congress led by Dumebi Kachikwu has dissolved the party’s National Working Committee and announced him as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

The decision was reached on Sunday during the faction’s national convention and presidential primary held in Abuja, where delegates adopted Kachikwu through a voice vote and approved changes to the party’s leadership structure.

Following the decision, the faction removed the existing National Working Committee and announced a new set of national officers to manage party affairs.

The newly named leadership includes Kingsley Oggah as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Abdulkadir Bashir as National Chairman, Johnny Derek as National Secretary, Kennedy O. Odion as National Treasurer and Chief Amirigoye as National Financial Secretary. Other positions, including National Publicity Secretary and National Legal Adviser, were also filled, with Dr Chris Ugwu announced as legal adviser.

After emerging as the faction’s presidential candidate, Kachikwu addressed delegates and spoke about the country’s political and economic situation. He said Nigeria faces growing challenges in areas such as insecurity, unemployment, economic pressure and social division.

He also expressed concern about the increasing number of Nigerians relocating abroad in search of better opportunities and argued that political leadership must respond to public concerns more effectively.

According to him, the party should present itself as a strong political alternative capable of restoring public confidence and creating opportunities for citizens.
Earlier at the event, Chairman of ADC State Chairmen, Kingsley Oggah, described the convention as an important stage for the faction and said members remained committed despite internal disagreements and political pressure.

The newly elected National Chairman, Abdulkadir Bashir, also called on members to follow the party’s constitution and avoid actions that could deepen existing divisions. He urged aggrieved members to return and work together to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
The development comes amid ongoing internal divisions within the ADC and wider political realignments linked to preparations for the 2027 general election.

Another bloc within the party is linked to former Senate President David Mark, who became associated with the party after opposition coalition talks ahead of the next election cycle. In July 2025, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu and members of the then National Working Committee stepped aside and backed Mark as interim national chairman.
