Abacha’s Son Loses as Dalhatu Wins Kano PDP Gov Ticket

Muhammad Bello Dalhatu has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kano State after defeating Mohammed Abacha, the eldest son of late former Head of State, Sani Abacha, in the party’s primary election held in the state. The contest took place as the PDP selected its flagbearer ahead of the next governorship election in Kano.

The result was announced on Monday by the chairman of the Kano State Governorship Primary Election Committee, Umar Hadejia, who said the exercise was conducted peacefully and followed the party’s constitution and approved electoral procedures.

According to the official results released after voting, Dalhatu secured 2,233 votes to win the contest, while Mohammed Abacha recorded 749 votes.
Following the outcome, the committee declared Dalhatu as the duly elected governorship candidate of the party for the coming election in Kano State.

Party officials described the exercise as orderly and free of major disruptions. They also appreciated the participation of aspirants, delegates, security agencies, party leaders and other stakeholders who took part in the process.

The committee further called on members of the PDP in Kano to close ranks and work together ahead of the general election campaign.

For Abacha, the result marks another unsuccessful attempt to secure the PDP governorship ticket in the state. He had earlier sought the party’s nomination in 2023 but lost after internal disputes and legal issues affected the party’s primary process at the time.

Before then, he had also contested the Kano governorship election under the platform of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance in 2019.

Dalhatu’s emergence now places him in position to lead the PDP into the next governorship election as the party begins preparations for the campaign season in Kano State.
