Rivers at 59: Fubara Calls for Peace, Unity

In his anniversary message, Fubara said Rivers State has continued to move forward despite different challenges over the years because of the resilience and unity of its people. According to him, the people have remained strong and committed to living together since the state was created.

The governor noted that one of the state’s greatest strengths remains the relationship among its different ethnic groups. He said communities across Rivers have continued to maintain a spirit of brotherhood which has helped sustain peace and stability over the decades.

Fubara also reflected on the place of Rivers in Nigeria’s growth, describing the state as a major contributor to the national economy. Beyond its oil and gas resources, he said Rivers people have continued to make contributions in sectors such as education, law, business, entertainment, public service and sports.

Speaking on governance, the governor assured residents that his administration would continue to focus on programmes that improve living conditions, strengthen security and extend development to every part of the state.

He maintained that governance should remain centred on the needs of the people and not limited to specific locations. According to him, every local government area deserves equal attention and access to development.

Fubara also acknowledged the efforts of the elders and leaders who played roles in preserving unity and peaceful coexistence in the state over the years. He encouraged young people to remain hopeful and contribute positively through innovation, discipline and hard work.

The governor further recognised the role of women in supporting families, communities and the wider society, describing their contribution as important to the continued growth and stability of Rivers State.

He called on residents to use the anniversary celebration as an opportunity to renew their commitment to peaceful living, mutual respect and collective progress. He added that the future of Rivers State should remain above political interests and personal differences.

Rivers State was created on May 27, 1967, during the administration of General Yakubu Gowon after the restructuring of Nigeria’s former regions into states.
