APC Faults Makinde Over the rising Insecurity In Oyo

The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State on Friday blamed Governor Seyi Makinde for the growing cases of kidnapping, killings and violent attacks recorded in different parts of the state.

The opposition party said the security situation in Oyo had worsened compared to other South-West states and accused the governor of failing to properly tackle the crisis.

The APC made its position known in a statement released in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare. The party said the state government had relied more on politics and public show instead of building a strong security structure to protect residents.

The criticism came days after the abduction of teachers and students from schools in Oriire Local Government Area. Gunmen had attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School in Esiele, taking away several victims during the coordinated operation.

Governor Makinde had earlier expressed sadness over the incident and described the situation as painful for both him and the state. During the primaries of the Allied Peoples Movement held in Ibadan, the governor also repeated his call for the creation of state police, saying governors should have more control over security operations in their states.

Reacting to the governor’s remarks, the APC said Makinde could not continue blaming the Federal Government while insecurity persisted in Oyo State. The party stated that as the Chief Security Officer of the state, the governor should take full responsibility for the protection of lives and property.

The opposition party accused the state government of sidelining traditional rulers and other local stakeholders who could help improve intelligence gathering and community security. It also claimed that funds meant for strengthening security operations were not properly utilised.

According to the APC, the state government purchased surveillance aircraft and security equipment but residents have not seen visible results despite continued attacks by criminals.

The party also alleged that members of the Oyo Amotekun Corps were poorly treated and lacked proper welfare packages, salaries and insurance despite the risks attached to their duties.

The APC further claimed that Governor Makinde once opposed discussions around state police but had now returned to support the idea following the worsening security situation. The party recalled that some governors submitted proposals on state police to the Federal Government in 2024, while Makinde reportedly described the process as unnecessary at the time.

The party urged the governor to focus on rescuing the abducted students and teachers and improve security efforts across the state instead of engaging in blame games.

It added that residents were becoming increasingly worried about the rise in criminal activities and expected stronger action from the state government.
