FCT Police Begin Crackdown on Tinted Vehicles

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has commenced a fresh enforcement exercise against vehicles operating with tinted windows, covered number plates, and improper registration as part of efforts to improve security in Abuja.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, during a press briefing in the nation’s capital on Friday. He explained that security agencies had identified a pattern in which criminals frequently use such vehicles to conceal their identities while carrying out illegal activities.

According to the police chief, intelligence gathered by the command showed that many criminal groups operating within Abuja deliberately rely on vehicles with tinted glass and obscured registration details to avoid detection and make investigations more difficult for law enforcement agencies.

He said the situation has become a growing concern because such vehicles have been linked to several crimes across the territory, including activities carried out by one-chance operators who target unsuspecting passengers.

Following these findings, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, directed the FCT Command to begin a comprehensive enforcement operation against vehicles found to be violating the regulations governing tinted windows and vehicle identification.

Sanusi explained that the operation is not intended to target motorists who have obtained the necessary approvals to use tinted glass on their vehicles. Instead, he said the exercise is focused on preventing criminals from taking advantage of such vehicles to commit offences and escape arrest.

The commissioner noted that the command had already recorded progress since the commencement of the exercise. More than 30 vehicles allegedly found operating with tinted windows, hidden number plates, or without proper registration documents have been seized by the police.

He added that owners and operators of the affected vehicles would face legal action in line with existing federal laws and the provisions of the FCT Road Transport Regulations of 2023.

The police command believes the enforcement exercise will help reduce crime by making it easier for security agencies to identify vehicles used in unlawful activities and improve public safety across Abuja.

Authorities also urged motorists to ensure their vehicles comply with all legal requirements to avoid sanctions as the operation continues across different parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
