Labour Party Fixes June 11 NEC Meeting to Ratify Primaries

The Labour Party faction led by Nenadi Usman has announced plans to convene a National Executive Council meeting next week as part of efforts to complete the process of validating candidates who emerged from its recent primary elections.

The development was made public by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, who disclosed that the meeting would take place on June 11. According to the party, the gathering will serve as the official platform for ratifying the outcomes of the primaries conducted nationwide ahead of the 2027 general election.

The NEC is also expected to approve the final list of successful candidates before forwarding their names to the Independent National Electoral Commission for recognition and inclusion in the electoral process.

Party officials said the exercise is being carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the Labour Party’s internal regulations governing candidate selection and nomination procedures.

Following the ratification process, the party plans to begin issuing Certificates of Return to candidates who secured nominations for various positions. Those expected to receive the certificates include candidates for the presidency, governorship seats, the Senate, and the House of Representatives.

The Labour Party described the upcoming NEC meeting as an important stage in its preparations for the next general election. Party leaders believe the gathering will help consolidate the outcomes of the primaries and provide direction for future campaign and mobilisation activities.

The meeting will also be the first National Executive Council session held since the party’s convention, making it a major event in the party’s post-convention activities.
The Labour Party conducted its nationwide primary elections on May 30 as part of preparations for the 2027 polls. The exercise produced candidates for several elective positions across the country.

Among those who emerged from the process is Chibuzo Okereke, a governance expert and policy strategist, who was announced by the party as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

With the June 11 NEC meeting approaching, party members and candidates are expected to await formal ratification of the primary election results before the next stage of the nomination process begins.

The approval of the candidates’ list will pave the way for official submission to INEC as the party continues its preparations for the next electoral cycle.
