Tinubu Commissions OSEX Road, Promises Completion of Public Projects

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday commissioned the main carriageways of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) stretching from Ring Road I Junction to Ring Road II Junction in Abuja, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to completing public projects across the country and ending the trend of abandoned government infrastructure.

The commissioning ceremony, held in the Federal Capital Territory as part of activities marking the President’s third year in office, was performed on his behalf by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Tinubu said the completion of the road project reflected the government’s determination to deliver infrastructure that can improve transportation, support economic activities and make life easier for residents.

According to the President, the OSEX project is another step in the ongoing development of Abuja and forms part of a broader plan to strengthen infrastructure across the country. He stated that road construction remains a key tool for opening up communities, creating jobs and supporting businesses of different sizes.

Tinubu recalled that the first phase of the expressway, linking the Villa Roundabout to Ring Road I Junction, was inaugurated in 2024, while the 15-kilometre left-hand service carriageway was commissioned in 2025. He said the latest phase connecting Ring Road I and Ring Road II marks further progress in the development of the capital city.

The President also praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for overseeing the delivery of projects across Abuja. He credited the ongoing transformation of the FCT to focused leadership and effective project supervision, noting that the administration remains committed to providing results for Nigerians.

Tinubu said the newly completed road is expected to reduce traffic pressure, lower transportation challenges and improve movement between districts such as Apo and Wasa. He added that better road connectivity would also encourage economic growth and urban expansion in the territory.

Speaking at the event, Wike said the successful completion of the project was made possible through cooperation between the government and the contractor, CGC Nigeria Limited.

He disclosed that before awarding the contract in late 2025, he sought assurances that the project could be delivered in time for the President’s third anniversary celebrations.

The minister explained that he repeatedly visited the site throughout the construction period to monitor progress and ensure that work was carried out according to schedule. He said the contractor fulfilled its commitment by delivering the project within the agreed timeframe.

Wike stated that the Tinubu administration remains focused on completing projects inherited from previous governments rather than abandoning them. According to him, a large number of projects completed by the FCT Administration since 2023 were initiated by earlier administrations but were continued under the current government.

He said government projects are funded with public resources and should not be left unfinished because of changes in leadership. He added that continuity remains an important part of governance and helps prevent waste of public funds.

The minister also revealed that the government has completed infrastructure at the relocation site prepared for traders and artisans operating at the Apo Mechanic Village. He said the move fulfils a longstanding promise to provide a more suitable location for their activities.

Responding to criticism over government performance, Wike pointed to several ongoing and completed projects across Abuja and its satellite towns, including road projects in Kwali, Karu and Kubwa, as well as water supply schemes in rural communities.

He maintained that visible development projects across the FCT demonstrate the administration’s commitment to improving living conditions.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the completion of the OSEX road as another step in the development of the nation’s capital. She credited the achievement to the Federal Government’s investment in roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects aimed at improving daily life for residents.

Mahmoud also commended Wike for overseeing projects that are changing the landscape of Abuja and expanding access to essential infrastructure.

The newly commissioned OSEX main carriageway is expected to improve movement across key parts of the Federal Capital Territory, support future urban growth and strengthen Abuja’s transportation system as the government continues its infrastructure development programme.
