Bandits Invade Kogi School, Kill Vice Principal, Child, One Other

Tragedy struck Iluke Bunu community in Kogi State on Wednesday after heavily armed bandits invaded Government Secondary School and surrounding areas, killing three people, including a school vice principal and a six-year-old child.

The attack threw residents into panic and mourning as the gunmen reportedly arrived in large numbers on about 40 motorcycles. Their presence caused fear across the community, with many residents running for safety as gunshots echoed through the area.

According to information released by the Kogi State Police Command, the attackers were suspected to have entered the community with plans to abduct students and residents. Security agencies received distress calls shortly after the invasion and quickly mobilised personnel to confront the gunmen.

Police officers from the Kabba ‘A’ Division, operatives of the Police Mobile Force, tactical units, military personnel and local vigilantes joined forces and moved into the area. The combined team engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Following the confrontation, the bandits retreated into nearby forests and bushes. Security agencies said ongoing investigations had not yet confirmed any successful mass abduction during the attack. Authorities noted that assessments were still being carried out to determine the full impact of the incident and verify reports from the affected community.

The police confirmed that three people lost their lives during the invasion. The victims were identified as Ganiyu Anifowose, a vice principal at a local school, 70-year-old Sunday Jacob Alhassan, and six-year-old Sunday Ayele.

Security operatives also recorded casualties during the operation. One of the suspected attackers was killed during the gun battle, while a member of the joint security team sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police directed security personnel to begin extensive operations across forests and surrounding communities to track down the fleeing attackers. Security teams have also increased patrols in the area to reassure residents and prevent further attacks.

Authorities urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations and operations.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Kogi State, particularly in rural communities where residents continue to face threats from armed criminal groups.

Many residents are now hoping that the ongoing security operation will lead to the arrest of those responsible and restore confidence in the safety of the area.
