NEF Raises Security Alarm, urges Tinubu To Declare National Security Emergency

The Northern Elders Forum also expressed concern over the rise in kidnapping for ransom, describing it as a growing criminal enterprise that has expanded because of weak enforcement, poor intelligence coordination, illegal arms circulation and porous borders. It warned that the continued spread of such activities could further weaken public confidence in government institutions.

The group said insecurity is affecting food production, education and investment, while many rural communities now live under constant fear of attack. It added that reports from affected areas often point to inadequate security presence and delayed responses during emergencies.

The forum further called for investigations into illegal mining and other economic activities that may be linked to criminal networks operating in different parts of the country. It argued that weak oversight in some areas has allowed unlawful activities to flourish.

As part of its recommendations, the NEF urged the Federal Government to strengthen cooperation among security agencies, improve intelligence gathering, intensify operations against criminal groups and ensure that those sponsoring or supporting violent activities are identified and prosecuted regardless of their status.

The group also called for better protection of farming communities, schools, highways and other vulnerable areas. In addition, it requested greater accountability in the management of security funds and clearer information on the results of security operations.

The forum maintained that the security crisis should not be viewed through political, ethnic or regional lenses, insisting that it is a national issue requiring urgent attention. It warned that continued insecurity could further damage public trust if decisive measures are not taken.

According to the NEF, the country needs immediate and measurable action to restore safety, protect citizens and prevent further deterioration of the security situation.
