Makinde Reveals Where Abducted Oyo Pupils Are Being Held

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has disclosed that pupils and teachers abducted by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area are believed to be held within the Old Oyo National Park.

The governor gave the update while addressing concerns over the fate of the victims, who were kidnapped during attacks on schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities on May 15, 2026.

According to Makinde, information available to security agencies indicates that the abducted pupils and teachers are still within the wider Old Oyo National Park area. He explained that the location presents a major challenge for rescue operations because of its large size and difficult terrain.

The governor said the park covers about 2,500 square kilometres and stretches across ten local government areas in Oyo State. Because of the vast area involved, security personnel have had to carry out carefully coordinated operations while following intelligence gathered from different sources.

Makinde stated that the rescue mission remains active and that security agencies are pursuing every useful lead that could help bring the victims back safely. He noted that authorities are taking all lawful steps necessary to ensure the abducted schoolchildren and teachers are released without harm.

He also urged residents to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing operations. The governor advised members of the public to report suspicious activities through the state’s emergency line and support efforts aimed at improving security.

Makinde warned against the spread of rumours and unverified reports, saying false information could complicate rescue efforts and create unnecessary confusion. He appealed to residents to rely on official updates and allow security agencies to carry out their work without interference.

The governor explained that the kidnapping is not only a concern for Oriire Local Government Area but a matter affecting the entire state because of the scale of the operation required to secure the victims’ release. He said the situation demands patience, cooperation and sustained efforts from all stakeholders.

He reassured families of the abducted pupils and teachers that the government has not relaxed its efforts and remains committed to ensuring their safe return. Makinde added that security agencies will continue their operations until the victims regain their freedom.

The abduction of the schoolchildren and teachers has continued to generate concern across Oyo State, with residents hoping for positive results from the ongoing rescue mission.
