NDC Dismisses Claims of Kwankwaso Exit Threat

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has rejected reports suggesting that its vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, threatened to quit the party over disputes involving candidates in Kano State.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, described the reports as speculation with no basis in fact. He said Kwankwaso never issued any threat to leave the NDC and remained committed to the party.

According to him, the rumours were spread by people who do not want the party to succeed. He also alleged that some political actors, including members of rival parties and dissatisfied individuals, were responsible for circulating such claims.

Director stated that apart from the speculation surrounding Kwankwaso, there had been instances in some parts of the country where political interests allegedly worked against the party’s candidates. He cited events in Delta State, where an incumbent politician was accused of backing multiple aspirants against an NDC candidate.

The clarification follows widespread reports that the former Kano State governor was unhappy with changes made to the party’s list of candidates in Kano and had considered leaving the NDC.

The controversy began after the party replaced several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State. Party officials explained that the adjustments were made to comply with an earlier power-sharing arrangement between the existing NDC structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.

A document issued by the Kano State chapter of the party stated that the changes were intended to reflect the agreed sharing of party positions and elective tickets among the different groups within the NDC.

Despite the reports of disagreement, the party insists that Kwankwaso remains fully committed to the NDC and that there is no threat to the unity of the organisation. The leadership maintained that the party remains focused on strengthening its structure and preparing for future political contests.
