Tinubu Commissions Judges’ Quarters in Abuja, Urges States to Support Judiciary

Presidential Bola Ahmed Tinubu opened a 10-unit residential estate for Court of Appeal judges on Tuesday in Katampe District, Abuja.

The project was done to improve housing for judges and support the justice system. The event took place during activities marking the third year of his administration. He was represented by the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

The project was built by the Federal Capital Territory administration under Nyesom Wike and is part of efforts to improve court infrastructure in the country.

The federal government said the housing project is part of plans to improve working conditions for judicial officers and support the independence of the courts. Tinubu said better living conditions for judges help the justice system function smoothly and allow them to carry out their duties without distraction.

He also said more land has been set aside in Katampe for future housing and facilities for other courts such as the National Industrial Court, Federal High Court, and the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, turning the area into a growing judicial zone.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said governments should take responsibility for providing facilities for courts located in their areas since they serve the people within those states or territories. He shared examples from his time as governor, when he helped build court facilities and housing to reduce travel challenges for residents seeking justice.

The President of the Court of Appeal, Court of Appeal Nigeria, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, said the new homes would support judges by giving them safe and comfortable living spaces, which also helps the work of the courts. She said proper housing helps protect judges and supports better delivery of justice.

The Federal Capital Development Authority explained that the estate includes 10 fully furnished five-bedroom duplexes with staff quarters, roads, water supply, electricity, backup power, security, and shared facilities. Officials said the project is part of a larger housing plan for judges in the area.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged state governments to also invest more in court facilities and welfare for judicial officers, saying it is important for the justice system across the country.
