Ekiti Guber: IGP Deploys CP Shogunle to Ensure Peaceful Poll

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has assigned Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle to Ekiti State to supervise security arrangements for the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

The deployment was announced in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ekiti State Police Command, SP Sunday Abutu. According to the command, the move forms part of broader security measures designed to ensure a peaceful electoral process across the state.

Following his arrival, Shogunle reportedly began implementing security plans approved by the police leadership. These measures include stronger cooperation with other security agencies, election officials and relevant stakeholders involved in the poll.

The police command said intelligence activities have been intensified to identify and prevent possible threats that could disrupt the election. Security agencies are also working to curb political violence, cult-related activities, thuggery and the spread of false information that could create tension before and during the poll.

Authorities disclosed that special arrangements have been made for the safe movement of election materials and personnel engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Security personnel will also be stationed at polling units, collation centres and other locations connected to the election.

A central operational structure has been established to coordinate rapid responses to security incidents. The arrangement will involve joint operations by members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security and other relevant agencies.

The police said voters, election officials, observers, journalists and public facilities connected to the election would receive adequate protection throughout the exercise.

Security personnel are also being deployed to areas identified as potential flashpoints to prevent any breakdown of law and order. The command stated that officers assigned to election duties have been briefed on their responsibilities and are expected to conduct themselves professionally while carrying out their assignments.

The police leadership appealed to political parties, candidates, community leaders and residents of Ekiti State to support efforts aimed at maintaining peace before, during and after the election.

The command further assured residents that it remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that the governorship election is conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.

Shogunle brings previous election security experience to the assignment. He was involved in coordinating security operations during the November 2025 Anambra State governorship election, which was conducted without major security disruptions.

Residents were also encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies as preparations continue for the crucial governorship poll.
