PDP Welcomes Iyabo Obasanjo, Gives Her Ogun Senate Ticket

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State on Wednesday officially received former senator Iyabo Obasanjo into its fold and unveiled her as its candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District in the next election.

The event took place at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, where party leaders, members and supporters gathered to welcome the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo following her departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Iyabo Obasanjo previously represented Ogun Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011. After losing her re-election bid in 2011, she stepped away from active politics and relocated to the United States, where she pursued an academic career.

She returned to the political scene earlier this year and joined the APC with plans to contest the Ogun governorship election. However, she later left the ruling party after failing to secure its governorship ticket. She cited dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of its internal affairs as the reason for her exit.

At the reception ceremony, Ogun PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, formally presented the party flag to Obasanjo and announced her as the party’s candidate for Ogun Central Senatorial District.

After receiving the party’s flag, Obasanjo pledged loyalty to the PDP and promised to abide by its constitution, manifesto and guiding principles. She also pledged to serve the people with dedication and place public interest above personal considerations.

The former senator expressed confidence in her political chances, maintaining that she remains a strong contender in the coming election and pointing to her previous record in the National Assembly.

The rally also featured remarks from PDP governorship hopeful Oladipupo Adebutu, who promised reforms aimed at strengthening local government administration if elected governor. He said his administration would support local government autonomy and ensure openness in the management of public funds.

The development marks another shift in Ogun State’s political landscape as parties continue to position themselves ahead of future elections. With Obasanjo now firmly in the PDP, the party hopes her return to active politics will strengthen its campaign efforts in Ogun Central and across the state.
