The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that it will not take part in the local government election scheduled to hold in Oyo State in December 2026. The party made this known on Thursday through a statement issued in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare.

According to the party, its decision was based on its belief that the planned council election is not in line with democratic principles. APC described the proposed exercise as unlawful and accused the state government of pursuing a process that serves political interests rather than the welfare of the people.

The opposition party also alleged that Governor Seyi Makinde has failed to support genuine local government autonomy since assuming office. It claimed that local councils in the state have not enjoyed full independence and that resources meant for grassroots administration have remained under the influence of the state government.

APC further argued that the planned election is aimed at installing individuals who would remain loyal to the governor after the end of his administration. The party maintained that the move is intended to preserve political control at the grassroots level beyond Makinde’s tenure.
The party expressed confidence that the political landscape in the state would change after the 2027 general elections and suggested that the governor’s influence would reduce once he leaves office. It insisted that local governments should be allowed to operate freely and independently without interference from higher levels of government.
With the announcement, APC has formally withdrawn from participation in the December council poll, setting the stage for further political debate over the conduct of local government elections and the issue of council autonomy in Oyo State.
