Sanwo-Olu, Obi, Obasanjo celebrate Onitsha monarch at 85

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, was celebrated by top Nigerian leaders, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The traditional ruler marked his 85th birthday with a grand celebration attended by political leaders, business executives, and traditional rulers. The event took place at The Delborough Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos State.

The celebration was held on Friday, June 19, 2026, with guests gathering for the event on the same day. The gathering was organised to honour the monarch’s life, leadership, and long-standing influence in national and cultural affairs, drawing dignitaries from different parts of the country.

The birthday celebration featured cultural performances that welcomed guests and set the tone for the event. Many prominent Nigerians attended to show respect for the traditional ruler, who also serves as chairman of the hotel’s board.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo spoke about his long relationship with the monarch, describing him as a calm and unifying figure who is respected across the country. He recalled their interactions over the years and praised his role in promoting harmony among different groups.

Peter Obi also attended the event and described the monarch as a father figure. He adjusted his schedule to be present at the celebration and offered prayers for him during the event.

In his response, the Obi of Onitsha appreciated the guests for honouring him and reflected on his long-standing relationship with Obasanjo, including past visits and shared moments during and after his time as president.

Other guests at the celebration included Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, Nkiru Anumudu, Obi Jackson, Stanley Uzochukwu, and several other notable figures from business and public life.
